Meet Ginger And Oka
,Meet Ginger and Oka. Today, we are following the journey of Oka and Ginger, the duo that inspires us to try new things. Oka is a dog chef, model, and influencer. She also spends time with her mom Ginger, and they are always up for an adventure. You can follow Oka's adventure on her account here
Her Journey To Becoming A Dog Mom
Oka is the Covid Puppy, as Ginger adopted her on 17th January 2021. Ginger and her partner waited for almost 2 years to meet her. She had decided that she wants to adopt a Corgi as soon as she met one for the first time. She did all the research and asked them many questions about how to raise a Corgi that's when she knew it - Corgi is a perfect match for her. As Ginger knew the amount of patience and attention a dog requires, and she wanted to make sure the pup gets it. Thats why despite loving the dogs for so long, she decided to wait till she can completely care for the dog. Ginger firmly believes Oka is worth the wait as she says- She was certainly worth the wait though! I’ve always wanted a dog of my own but only when I knew I could commit the time needed to raise/train one.
The balance between being a Dog mom and Work Life
Balancing work and being a dog mom is a difficult task for many people. Ginger is lucky enough to work from home and be there for Oka. Her work bestie is none other than the dedicated and cutest Oka. For the days she has to travel to work, Oka spends the day with her Corgi Dad, Colin. They spend the day enjoying, and Oka loves those days as Colin cares for her a lot. For those rare days when both of them have to go out for a few hours, Oka shows everyone how independent she is by taking a nap in front of the door. To protect the house, of course.
The Inspiring Oka
Oka has inspired Ginger in so many ways. Since day one, as she raised Oka as a puppy, she taught her patience and compassion. Along with that, Oka is a very active pooch, and she makes sure no one becomes too lazy and will take everyone on an adventure. She takes Ginger on hikes and runs often. Oka is fearless, as she is always ready to try new things, even though she is uncertain of them at first. She doesn't let it stop her from doing new things. She reminds Ginger that anything is possible if you just TRY!
A Purrfect Day
Their favorite way to spend time is training Oka, as it helps her grow mentally and physically. Ginger also knows that training is important for Oka's health and it allows their bond to grow stronger. Even though Oka is Miss Independent, she allows Ginger to have cuddle sessions. Oka knows Ginger loves them, so she makes an exception for her.
Bad Days Happen to all of us
Here is how Ginger handles bad days like a rockstar, making sure it doesn't impact Oka, “Just like every dog parent, we have our good days and bad days. When we have a ‘bad day’’, I do my very best to see things from OKA’s perspective. Did she chew something she wasn’t supposed to because she was bored or because I never taught her that item was off-limits? Most people might be surprised to know that OKA is still working on reactivity with small children. I have to remind myself that not every encounter will be perfect but “practice makes progress ”
She makes us realize that on the bad days, we need to look from the dog's perspective. She reminds us to be patient and to try to think of the reason behind the dog's behavior. Remember, dogs are not perfect, and that's what makes them so amazing.
A word of Advice
Are you thinking about adopting a dog? Here is the advice Ginger has for you, “The advice I would give first-time dog moms is please be kind to yourself! It’s easy to only see the highlights of other dogs on social media and compare yourself / your training styles. Every dog is DIFFERENT with DIFFERENT NEEDS. Also, don’t be afraid to advocate for your dog’s needs. Whether it’s saying “Sorry, my dog is reactive and needs space” or tuning out what others tell you on what you should/shouldn’t do for your dog. At the end of the day, you will know your dog best, you’re their loving pawrent after all 🥰!”
So, to all the wonderful dog moms out there, you are amazing, and as Ginger said, your pup loves you. So keep being you! We interviewed more dog moms, so to read about Julia and Lily, click here
